Our language is full of hundreds of quotations that are often cited but seldom confirmed. Ralph Keyes's The Quote Verifier considers not only classic misquotes such as "Nice guys finish last," and "Play it again, Sam," but more surprising ones such as "Ain't I a woman? Keyes's in-depth research routinely confounds widespread assumptions about who said what, where, and when. Organized in easy-to-access dictionary form, The Quote Verifier also contains special sections highlighting commonly misquoted people and genres, such as Yogi Berra and Oscar Wilde, famous last words, and misremembered movie lines.

WOMAN NEEDS A MAN – LADIES CUT

Posted by Mary Kassian. Sadly, we swallowed the bait. And now a whole generation of girls is being raised to believe that men are inconsequential, and that women can make it just fine without them. Take the T-shirt a friend of mine spotted for sale in Target, for example. Just think about it for a moment. On the surface, the slogan seems to encourage a girl to develop a healthy self-respect and avoid getting enmeshed in dependent relationships. The slogan insinuates that men are inferior, and that they are expendable.

It fosters an unhealthy, independent, a-woman-needs-a-man-like-a-fish-needs-a-bicycle, type of attitude. Can you imagine the outrage?

She can WIN! Indeed, in order to truly win, she must do so without them. Men are the bad guys. Independence is the highly prized and sought after trait that will guarantee her success. So she approaches relationships with the resolve to retain her autonomy at all costs. Even in Christian circles, we cultivate an attitude of independence in our girls. The underlying message is that women need to be independent because men are untrustworthy, and will almost certainly let them down.

Is she better off without ties to a godly father, uncle, cousin, husband, or brother? Will she succeed when she fiercely exerts her autonomy and regards and treats men as non-essential? Will this attitude actually enhance her relationships and her life? God created the two sexes to be interdependent—not dependent, codependent, or independent. This is the case in marriage, and is also the case in the general way the sexes interact with one another.

Scripture actually cautions us against adopting an independent attitude:. For just as woman came from man, so man comes through woman and all things come from God. God did not create male and female to operate independently.

You will do your daughter a disservice if you teach her to be fiercely independent. Yes, you should teach her to guard against unhealthy relationships, and not to look to men for her source of identity. But at the same time, you should be careful to teach her to respect men, to encourage and speak well of them, and to value and welcome the contribution that they can make to her life. I understand that there are some scum-bags out there. I understand that your daughter may never get married.

Or that her spouse might ditch her. Scripture provides an answer to these potential situations. It promises that in such situations, He will be their father or husband. Women need men. Even those who will never have a boyfriend or husband need men. Do not teach your daughter to be independent of men.

Do not teach her to devalue men and write them off as inconsequential to her life. We need men. We need them to be the fathers, brothers, husbands, protectors, providers, and heroes God created them to be. Gloria Steinem clearly got it wrong. How does an attitude of independence negatively impact male-female relationships? Why do you think women fear losing their independence?

How can women avoid becoming dependent, co-dependent, and independent, and foster a healthy interdependence instead? Mary and her husband love hiking and biking in the spectacular Canadian Rockies, spending long winter nights in front of a crackling fireplace, and escaping the snow from time-to-time to dive, snorkel and paddleboard in the sun. Naturally, they love spoiling their adorable grandkids. She knows her way around a hardware store and is happy as a lark when she has a power tool in her hand.

Where modern-day women turn to the age-old wisdom of the Bible to find the smarts they need to succeed at life and love. I think not.

Independence versus Interdependence God created the two sexes to be interdependent—not dependent, codependent, or independent.

Irina Dunn

This feminist slogan has often been attributed to either Gloria Steinem but was in fact coined by Irina Dunn in Gloria Steinem had this to say in a letter she wrote to Time magazine in autumn She paraphrased the philosopher who said, 'Man needs God like fish needs a bicycle. I was paraphrasing from a phrase I read in a philosophical text I was reading for my Honours year in English Literature and Language in It was 'A man needs God like a fish needs a bicycle'. My inspiration arose from being involved in the renascent women's movement at the time, and from being a bit of a smart-arse. I scribbled the phrase on the backs of two toilet doors, would you believe, one at Sydney University where I was a student, and the other at Soren's Wine Bar at Woolloomooloo, a seedy suburb in south Sydney. The doors, I have to add, were already favoured graffiti sites. Dunn's modesty is appropriate, as ' A needs a B like a C needs a D' was a well-established format in the USA many years before ; for example, this usage in the Connecticut newspaper The Hartford Courant , December, The place [Aragon, Spain] didn't need an American consul any more than a cow needs a bicycle; for it had no trade with America, and no American tourist ever dreamed of stopping there.

Or so we were told by Irina Dunn - an Australian feminist activist - and by Gloria Steinem, who popularised the statement.. It is men who have produced the greatest works in all of the arts - literature, poetry, music, paintings, sculptures, films, plays, architecture etc. It is men who have progressed most of our understanding in just about all areas to do with science, engineering and medicine - astronomy, chemistry, biochemistry, physics, geology, cosmology, mathematics, economics, geography, climatology, aeronautics, pharmacology, surgery, computer hardware, software etc etc etc etc It is men who have built the houses, the bridges, the roads, the railways, the dams, the factories.

Gloria Steinem?

Irina Patsi Dunn born 17 March [1] is an Australian writer, social activist and filmmaker, who served in the Australian Senate between and In she became a senator representing the Nuclear Disarmament Party. She was chosen following the disqualification from parliament of the man originally elected from that party in the election, Robert Wood , who was ruled ineligible as he did not hold Australian citizenship. Following her refusal to resign to allow Wood to return to the Senate once he had become a citizen, she was expelled from the party and sat as an independent.

A Woman Without a Man Is Like a Fish Without a Bicycle

I like the fact that the book was priced so cheap compared to in stores of course. BUT when I received it the cover was all ripped up and the binding looks like it is about to fall apart. I was very upset because I purchased this as a Xmas gift for my boyfriend! I first became aware of this project a few years ago, when Fred Shapiro started asking questions about quotations on Stumpers-L now Project Wombat.

Ah, the s. Lots of important things happened then, including the political coming of age of yours truly. These two great events came together in that other lates and earlys development — the t-shirt with writing on it. But when I was a little Buzzling, kids wore plain white t-shirts, or solid-color collar-less shirts which sometimes had stripes. The number of different images and different sayings or phrases printed on t-shirts exploded in the early 70s. It was also funny, and it was also hip.
