How to get friends phone numbers on facebook

Facebook asked users to add their phone numbers as an extra security measure, but now they are learning their numbers are being used as a way to look up their profiles and even target them with ads, without the option to opt out. TechCrunch first reported the feature after Jeremy Burge, who runs the site Emojipedia, called it out in a tweet on Friday. While users can hide their phone number from the general public and restrict who can look them up by phone number by switching the setting from "everyone" to "friends of friends" or just "friends," Facebook does not give the option to get rid of the look-up option entirely. That means if a user's setting allows "everyone" to look them up by phone number, even a person without a Facebook account could find their page on the site. The concern around Facebook's use of phone numbers follows its plans to further integrate its messaging services across Messenger, WhatsApp and Instagram. WhatsApp uses phone numbers as the primary way to set up an account, which could raise privacy concerns for users already surprised by the use of their phone number on Facebook's other platforms.

How to Get an ID & Phone Number From a Facebook Link

You may recently have gotten worried that Facebook has your phone number, even though you don't remember giving it to the social network. At the same time, you may have also realized the social network actually has your Facebook friends' phone numbers too, and you can see them. Even though this feature has been available for quite a while, it became a big deal this week when some users started posting this message on their Facebook status, which in turn was showing up on people's News Feeds:.

Go to the top right of the screen, click on Account, then click on Edit Friends, go left on the screen and click on Contacts. Then go to the right hand side and click on "visit page" to remove this display option. Please repost this on your Status, so your friends can remove their numbers and thus prevent abuse if they do not want them published.

This is a little over the top, but it did freak out a lot of people who weren't aware Facebook had their number, and that they could see all their friends' numbers too. You can see this list yourself by clicking on Facebook Phonebook you must be logged in to Facebook. Palo Alto has essentially aggregated the numbers that all your friends have shared with you into a list: you can see the individual numbers as well by going to each of your friends' profiles.

The phone numbers listed there were either added by your friends themselves and made visible to you, or you have previously synced your phone contacts with Facebook.

Just like on your phone, only you can see these numbers. So if Facebook didn't take your number by force, when did you give it to the social network? If this is the way you added it, then this is also the way you should remove it.

You have the following options to choose from: Everyone, Friends of Friends and Networks, Friends and Networks, Friends of Friends, Friends Only this is what I have mine set to , and Customize which lets you drill down to specific people.

The other possibility is that you have installed the Facebook Mobile app on your smartphone at some point. After doing so, there was an option to sync your phone contacts with Facebook. This allows you to call Facebook friends without knowing their number as well as seeing their Facebook profile picture when you call them or they call you.

This is possible because Facebook compares the number you have for your friend Joe Smith with the number Joe Smith has on Facebook. If you enable this feature, all contacts from your device name, email address, phone number will be sent to Facebook and be subject to Facebook's Privacy Policy, and your friends profile photos and other info from Facebook will be added to your iPhone address book.

Please make sure your friends are comfortable with any use you make of their information. In other words, you agreed to upload information on your phone to Facebook and your friends have done the same, so they can see your number s and you can see theirs. If you want to stop this from happening, click on Remove Imported Contacts again, you must be logged in to Facebook. On the Remove page, Facebook says, "Before you click Remove, you need to make sure syncing is switched off" and gives instructions on how to find syncing on your smartphone.

Here is where it gets a little worrying: this list includes the phone numbers of your friends who are not on Facebook. For example, if you let Facebook grab your phone's contact list, which includes a Joe Smith who isn't on Facebook, the social network still gets whatever you had about Joe on your phone his first name, his last name, and his phone number.

Facebook says it does this so if Joe one day joins the social network, it will suggest that you become Facebook friends. Facebook is once again going out of its way to be helpful, which many users like a lot and others simply find scary.

Putting all your phone numbers together in one place is part of the company's bigger strategy to become the center of all your communication needs just this week the company released a new Facebook Messenger app for Android and iPhone.

How to remove your phone number from Facebook

As part of its overhaul of user privacy, Facebook has announced a raft of changes to how it handles user data, including removing the ability to find other Facebook users by searching for their phone number. Facebook has also taken steps to limit the data available to third-party apps. It's tightening the review process for apps that request your photos and posts, and apps are no longer allowed to request sensitive data including marital status, religious views, education and work history — the type of data that enabled organizations like Cambridge Analytica to deliver precisely targeted ads to voters in the US presidential election.

Since you have been using Messenger , you have finally regained contact with all your old schoolmates, whom you had completely lost track of. Before going into the heart of this tutorial, however, I want to tell you that if your friends have not made their phone number public on Facebook, you will not be able to trace the information you are looking for; not using Messenger at the very least. It is for this reason that, in addition to showing you how to see a number on Messenger and how to synchronize the contacts in the address book, I will also list some services that may be useful to trace the number of people you know only the name. So, are you ready to start?

How Facebook got your phone number (and how to take it back)

With billions of users making Facebook a regular part of their social networking activities, the odds are good that if you need to touch base with someone, you can find them on Facebook. However, sometimes you need a more direct form of contact, like making a phone call or sending an email. In those cases, you can sometimes find contact information on Facebook itself, and if not, some tools on the internet may get you what you're after. Facebook has more than 2 billion monthly active users who check in with the networking site to post their thoughts, find out what their friends are up to, argue with strangers over politics, and much more. Businesses use Facebook to promote their goods and services and to interact with both customers and potential customers. Some people and posts on Facebook are visible to the whole world. Others enable a variety of privacy functions that limit who sees what in terms of a user's identity, contact information, and posts on the site. However, Facebook offers a flexible search function. Enter a person's name in the search field, and the results identify users with that name or with a closely related name. Scan the results for the person you're seeking.

Facebook no longer lets you search for friends by phone numbers

Facebook users have a new privacy concern after discovering that the social network apparently stores a list of phone numbers belonging to your Facebook friends and, apparently, to contacts stored in the mobile device that you use to access Facebook's mobile app. Before you panic, this list is not publicly visible to your entire social network. According to The Washington Post , this Phonebook Contacts feature has been live for "a few years," though many users are just noting its existence. Your personal list, created from contacts stored in your mobile device, is accessible on your Facebook profile. To view the list, go to the account tab in the upper-right-hand corner of your Facebook page, click "Edit Friends," and then select Contacts from the sidebar menu all the way on the left-hand side of the page.

If you access Facebook from a mobile device, your phone number may be listed in your friends' contacts list.

Facebook really wants your phone number, nagging you for one as soon as you join. This isn't all bad since it can help secure your account with two-factor authentication. On the flipside, this makes it easy to reveal the private phone numbers of virtually anyone on Facebook, including celebrities and politicians.
