My wife’s addicted to her phone. What should I do?

First thing in the morning. On the way to school. As soon as she gets home. But is her phone attachment really cause for concern? Kids today are growing up in a digital world, even more so than previous generations. And just like all the other places we need to help our kids be healthy and strong, we need to support them here, too. Andrea Bastiani Archibald to get the scoop. First off, some games are educational or require strategy and thought processes that will help her in other arenas. All good things!

Bastiani Archibald. And while she acknowledges that especially with younger children, a spot check of messages or social media is often fully appropriate—because younger kids might not be as aware of how the messages they send are coming across, and they might also not be aware of or know how to handle inappropriate situations—she still emphasizes direct communication in these matters.

Asking kids how they treat each other in texts and on social is just as important as asking about how they treat each other in the cafeteria. In fact, more than half of teens fully admit that they spend too much time on mobile devices. In a recent study, 54 percent of kids said their parents checked their devices too often, and more than one in three said they felt unimportant when their parents were distracted by their phones.

So the problem goes both ways. How to fix? Have your kids help decide when it makes most sense for everyone to put down their phones so they take ownership and don't just see it as a punishment. Have your children help set the ground rules and decide on appropriate times beyond meal times for face-to-face conversation only.

Her debut collection of essays, The Pursuit of Not quite a man, not quite a human, but rather, an organism feeding off whatever host it can find, like a parasitic worm filling an entire dietary tract.
