Review: ‘The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death’ is chilling creep show
That said, the new installment is, at best, a serviceable creep show, one with far more chills than thrills. The women bring these traumatized kids to the supposed safety of the now-abandoned Eel Marsh House in the remote, fog-shrouded British countryside.
But the home is a creaky, crumbling affair with tricky door locks and bad lighting. With the help of Harry Jeremy Irvine , a handsome Royal Air Force pilot conveniently stationed in the area, Eve will attempt to protect her charges from the evil lurking about the spooky dwelling, all while unraveling the mystery of the angry, suicide-provoking phantom.
That Eve and Harry are both haunted by their own personal demons adds a welcome texture to the largely ho-hum supernatural narrative. Director Tom Harper, working off a script by Jon Croker, has infused this evocative, handsomely mounted film with its requisite share of jolts, many of which, unfortunately, are dream-sequence cheats or jokey contrivances.

The Woman in Black: Angel of Death review – a decorously English chiller
Ominous noises are a fixture on the soundtrack. In color, this is hit or miss. The two biggest jolts are in the commercial, though judging by the audience reaction at my screening, not many people have seen those TV ads. This is an odd sequel in that its titular character has been reduced to a supporting role. One of her students, Edward Oaklee Pendergast has just lost both of his parents to a bombing. This provokes cruelty from the other students and a sense of maternal protectiveness in Eve. He tells the story of how the unmarried Woman in Black gave birth to a son she was forced to give up to her sister. The son, Nathaniel, was killed by the unusual topography surrounding the road that leads to Eel Marsh House: At high tide, the road is submerged in water, causing Nathaniel to drown while the Woman in Black looked on helplessly. Her appearance is a harbinger for the death of a child. In the sequel, the doomed child in question is Edward.

Its strong points are the sense atmosphere and the appropriately misty backdrop, though it lacks the star quality that Daniel Radcliffe brought to the original, with the characters thinly drawn as the film favours mood over well-rounded personalities. The first film was set in the late 19 th century, with Radcliffe playing a young lawyer who has a series of horrifying experiences at haunted Eel Marsh House, while the sequel shifts forward some 40 years to the early years of World War II. During the Blitz of , schoolteacher Eve Parkins Phoebe Fox is sent with a class of evacuees to the now derelict Eel Marsh House, out in East Anglia where it is isolated from the nearby village by a causeway across the Marshland. With the help of hunky RAF pilot Harry Jeremy Irvine — who has wartime issues himself — she learns more about the dark secrets of the house and the vengeful spirit that has set its sights on the children. She has an innate warmth and intelligence that helps her Eve convince as a young woman who rails against the horrors around as she seeks to protect young Edward. The screenplay was written by Jon Croker from a story by Susan Hill. Thirty years after the events of the first film, during the London Blitz , Eve Parkins joins some of her schoolchildren and the school's headmistress, Jean Hogg, to evacuate them to the isolated market town of Crythin Gifford. Upon arrival at the apparently nearly deserted town, Eve is confronted by a raving madman, Jacob, and flees.
